Where does self-sabotage come from?
You know, that impulse to give up on a project when it’s just about done, to start an argument with someone when your relationship has been a little too stable. It’s that feeling right when you’re about to get what you’ve always wanted that you don’t actually want it anymore, that in fact, the secret to your happiness is just around some other corner.
Could self-sabotage be even sneakier than this?
Maybe the most pervasive form of self-sabotage is the kind that we do with our thoughts rather than our actions. Maybe it is the demon behind that nagging thought in your head that always pops up right when things are perfect to proclaim that disaster is just around the corner, that nothing can stay good forever, that such happiness just doesn’t happen for you.
But wait, those thoughts are harmless, right?
No matter how you conceptualize it, they’re not.
