I got a little further than you have, page 95. I have not found the use of the oher languages to be a setback, pretty much it adds color and the meaning is framed by the context. The history lesson is not always to be trusted, but since I am not an expert, for the purpose of the book I move on. I do love the logicall banter and the fact that it forces your brain to look at the situation from every angle. This is a murder mystery with a higher calling. It brings some theology, practicality and realism to the fore front of faith and reason. It makes you think and the characters are interesting and enjoyable. So far, I am pleased with this book.
I agree—I love a book that makes you think. "A murder mystery with a higher calling" is a great way of putting it, and the story Eco is building here is more vibrant than most that I've read.
I have found the other languages to be a bit of a slog, but that might be because I'm looking up the meanings instead of just gathering the meaning through context. I think I'm going to try your method moving forward.
I had read that you were going to do that. I knew it would slow me down and also cause some difficulty. I think, you should only look it up if you feel clueless. If you have a good idea, you just move on. After you finish reading, then maybe look it up to check your understanding. Hopefully, it will become less necessary as you get used to following the inferences.
Good idea, haha. I'll try it that way this week. The perfectionist in me hates the idea of potentially missing something, so I'll probably do what you say and look it up afterwards, but stopping repeatedly is definitely slowing me down and taking me out of the book.
